Thompson and Rickman To Help Launch FilmClub
|
UK’s Telegraph reported that Emma Thompson (Professor Trelawney) and director Alan Parker will help to launch FilmClub throughout England. The club is a program to expose school children to films (from Bollywood to Japanese anime) they might not have the opportunity to see.
Alan Rickman (Professor Snape), Sienna Miller and Lord Attenborough have also committed their assistance.

In 2006, FilmClub was founded by Beeban Kidron, director of Bridget Jones: the Edge of Reason, and Lindsay Mackie, an educationist. After a successful pilot in 25 schools, they have secured government funding.
Ms. Kidron said stories and the telling of them are the foundations of human communication and understanding. The article quoted her to have said:
"I’ve seen at least a dozen kids have a life-changing experience in front of me, a light going on. There’s one boy I’m thinking of who’s in the lower sixth who hadn’t made a single friend at school, had lots of problems at home and had basically never seen a film before. Now he’s made loads of friends through FilmClub. All he talks about is film, he goes to the cinema every weekend and he’s written a screenplay.”
There is already a branch of the FilmClub at Lauriston Primary School in Hackney, East London. The Red Shoes, based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale about a girl who cannot stop dancing, The Marx Brothers’ Duck Soup from 1933, and the subtitled French film, Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday were a few of the films that had been shown to the students. But according to the FilmClub's organizers at that school, the children’s favorite was Grease with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.
“They made me rewind it four or five times so they could dance to all the songs again,” Karen Parker, who helps to run the club at the school, told The Times.

Note: On the FilmClub website, Ms. Kidron has created a blog where she has written Alan Rickman's thoughts about FilmClub, a visit with Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy), and a list from Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) of his favorite movies. Click here to read those blogs.
