A Look Back At Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
|
While waiting for the release and "a look at the prospects" for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Eugene Novikov at Cinematical.com decided to look back at which book in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling had the best film adaptation, so far.
He believed Alfonso Cuarón's direction of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban "not only did right by the book, but expanded it, improved it, and brought it to life".

As much as he enjoyed reading the books in the Harry Potter series, Mr. Novikov wrote in his review that he had been disappointed with Prisoner of Azkaban after reading Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets, in spite of its humor and "wonderful, world-building details". And yet, Prisoner of Azkaban became Mr. Novikov's favorite Harry Potter story on the screen due to Alfonso Cuarón's direction of details such as:
"the way Ron grabs Harry's shoulder and turns him around when Draco Malfoy and the Slytherins start their taunts; the way Harry instinctively shields Hermione with his body when the dementors start circling in the film's frightening climax. The scene where Harry goes for a ride on the hippogriff moved me to tears, because it's not just a frivolous CGI frolic, it's Harry's momentary, joyful solace from the harsh reality that awaits him below."
Mr. Novikov also credits Mr. Cuarón for making Hogwarts appear to be an actual physical place of "determinate geography" with "beautiful, long takes". He believed this added credibility to the time-traveling when the characters were "stalking themselves around Hogwarts grounds, doing their best not to be seen".
"What in the book seemed kind of like a poorly foreshadowed stunt becomes genuinely suspenseful, a highlight of the entire franchise. And it's all because of how rigorous Cuarón is, how careful, how precise."
