Review: Ballet Shoes Enduring Story of Growing Up
I had the chance to watch Emma Watson's (Hermione Granger) latest film, Ballet Shoes, on DVD tonight and absolutely loved the film. I've posted my review, which you can read here.

Ballet Shoes is Emma Watson’s latest film. In this film she is one of three girls who are orphans and brought up together. The three girls vow to each other to put their names in the history books. Their guardian is impoverished and is forced to let rooms in their home in order to make ends meet. One of those renters suggests that the girls become involved in the theatre. Here, Posy (Lucy Boynton) and Pauline (Emma) find their love and talent. However, Petrova (Yasmin Paige) isn’t too keen with the arts and would rather get her hands greasy or fly an airplane. Meanwhile, their guardian, Sylvia (Emilia Fox) is becoming ill and the stress of taking care of three children, a large home, and the renters are making things worse for her. However, she doesn’t give up and helps the girls find their dreams (and herself a beau, too!). Richard Griffiths (Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter films) is Sylvia's Great Uncle Matthew and the owner of the home. A paleontologist, he is often not at home for months or years at a time and brings (or sends) the three girls as babies to Sylvia.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this film. Sometimes I find that stories of orphans are often repetitive and, well, boring. However, this story wasn’t just about the orphans; it was also about growing older. The three girls’ dedication to each other was moving. No matter the odds, they did what everything for each other and their family. When one didn’t seem that they were going to accomplish their dreams, the others came through for them. Their love for each other was a wonderful thing to see. The guardian, Sylvia, was what every mother should be: hard working and dedicated. No matter what, she came through for the girls and seemed to never think of herself.

Emma’s performance was top notch and drew me in to care for her character, even when I didn’t like her when she became a snotty actress (she was later knocked down a peg or two). Lucy was striking as young Posy. I was especially surprised with Yasmin. She truly brought her character to life and shows great promise for her future acting career.

Ballet Shoes was a truly touching story and a perfect choice for a family film. I give it four of five stars.
