Branagh & Fiennes: Support Campaign For Chekov’s White Dacha
|
According to an article posted by The Guardian, Harry Potter stars Kenneth Branagh (Professor Lockhart) and Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort) have offered their support to Dr. Rosamund Bartlett’s Yalta Chekov campaign. This campaign is to repair damages made by time in the playwright Anton Chekov’s home known as the White Dacha.

Anton Chekov wrote two of his classic plays in the White Dacha, The Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard. Kenneth Branagh is currently performing in Ivanov, also written by Chekov, at the Donmar Warehouse in London. In 1997, Ralph Fiennes performed the role of "Ivanov" at The Almeida Theatre in London.
The White Dacha was made into a museum in 1921 and still contains some of Chekov’s belongings. The heating was turned off in 2005. Winters by the sea have created mold in the wallpaper. The roof has started to leak.
Funding for repairs have been very difficult to obtain due to political conflict in the area of Yalta, Russia. Although money has been received by the museum staff for the wallpaper and the roof, the Yalta Chekov campaign aims for the White Dacha to be fully restored to its original condition which includes continous heating during the winter, reinforcing the foundation, and repairing the drainage systems.
