Update 3: J.K. Rowling Recieves Légion d'honneur, Photos
|
We previously told you that J.K. Rowling was to receive the Légion d'honneur today at the Palais de l’Elysée (Elysée Palace) in Paris from French President Nicolas Sarkozy. She has now received the award, which grants her the honorary title of “knight” in the legion. Some photos of her at the ceremony can be found in our gallery beginning here (thanks to UHP).
UPDATE: President Sarkozy's statement when giving J.K. Rowling the award:
Harry Potter has a proven educational virtue and, thanks to this saga being internationally recognized, you contributed to once again give a taste for reading with the young people, and also with writing. With you, they understand that reading is not a punishment but a source of pleasure. (per UHP)
You can read a translated article (from French to English) here.
UPDATE 2: UHP now have a video of Jo at the ceremony. You can download it here (right click, save as, flv, 35MB).
UPDATE 3: During the ceremony, Jo thanked her French readers for not resenting her choice of a French name for her evil character Voldemort. In French, Voldemort means 'flight of death'. She said, "I can assure you that the decision did not come from any anti-French sentiment ... But I needed a name that evoked both power and exoticism."
Congratulations, Jo! |
