To promote the event, the director of the film Oliver Irving spoke with People magazine about his leading star. He stated that Robert Pattinson almost quit acting:
"He was thinking about giving up acting and maybe doing music solely when this role [in How To Be] came along," the film's director, Oliver Irving, tells PEOPLE. "He wanted to play the roles he wasn't getting."

Mr. Irving went on to say that playing "an awkward, quirky young musician who hires a self-help guru to come live with him" got Pattinson "back into the swing of things". Also, he ordered Pattinson not to cut his hair between the time he gave Pattinson the role to the time they started shooting. And Pattinson’s trousers were cut “a little bit too high”. Irving believed these two factors helped to mute Pattinson’s good looks.
As for Pattinson’s musicial abilities, it is now known how well he can play the guitar and piano. His harmonica playing is not so bad either; but he was told to play "more simply", according to Irving who acknowledged that Pattinson has "a really good technique".
According to the article, Irving isn’t surprised over Pattinson’s rise to fame since they filmed How To Be. He was quoted to have said:
"He has a playfulness and naivety that he was able to inject into the character. He's very down to earth and unpretentious. I think that's probably what makes him appealing."
