Happy Birthday, Robbie Coltrane!
|
Happy Birthday, Mr. Coltrane! The actor who portrays “Hagrid” in the Harry Potter films was actually born with the name Anthony Robert McMillan in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, Scotland on March 30, 1950. He is 59 years old today. He was educated at Glenalmond College in Perthsire and then the Glasgow School of Art where he was teased for sounding like Prince Charles.
In his early twenties, Mr. Coltrane created his current (stage) name in honor of jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. He became busy doing theater and stand-up comedy in the early 1980’s. Eventually, he appeared in films like Flash Gordon, Death Watch Scrubbers, Krull, Absolute Beginners, and Mona Lisa .
Mr. Coltrane also has worked in television. He is well-known to the British tv audience for his series Cracker. Recently, he filmed travel documentaries based on his passion for travel and transportation for the British ITV network. They are available now on DVD.
There is an unconfirmed quote that Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling stated the look of “Hagrid” was based on Mr. Coltrane’s appearance. I wouldn't be surprised, would you?

|
Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid in the Harry Potter films), who's currently rehearsing for his role in Peter McDougall's The Brother's Suit, has stated that he may not be in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. According to the Herald, when asked if he'll be in the fifth movie, he stated, "It's open to negotiations. . . I know the answer and it's 'I don't know'. That's that." He declined to comment further, except to say that the role was a complicated one.
Please realize that this is just a rumor, and these types of things have been said or heard of before by other actors.
