Harry Potter At The OSCAR Awards

Our Students Care About Reading (OSCAR) awards is a ceremony on April 11 that honors the favorite books students read during “March is Reading Month”. In March, sixth grade students made sure to read as many nominated books or series they could in order to vote on April 2 for categories like Best Setting, Best Male Protagonist, etc. The ceremony was created by the Language Arts department to promote reading and to encourage students to read books they didn’t know existed.

Before the awards were presented, a video was shown with soldiers, firefighters, a judge, a guitar player, educators, and others who stated how important reading was to their careers. Even the crew from a local radio station expressed how important it was.

When the sixth-graders either dressed normally or in costume entered, students from other grades cheered, snapped pictures, and acted like crazed fans and paparazzi. Brennen Albrecht was the one to dress as Harry Potter and be the recipient of screams from the “fans”. He was very confident he would win an award.

“I’ve read all the books, and I thought he was a good character. My character was chosen as the best male protagonist in past years, so I think my book will win this year.”

Other OSCAR winners were Exploring The Titanic for Best Nonfiction, “Count Olaf” from the Lemony Snicket series for The Most Outrageous Character, and The Chronicles of Narnia for Best Setting.
